2007 to be big year for wireless integration - We've been hearing for years how television and internet services will inevitably be integrated by carriers such as the large telco and cable companies. 2006 was the year VoIP really came of age and the cable companies started integrating voice over ip with their other services.
Big deal, right...
All signs point to 2007 being the year that wireless is added to the mix in a serious way. The telcos have been dragging their feet (as they usually do), letting the big cable providers lead the way.
Adding wireless to the services bundle offered by cable operators -- which already includes television, video, internet, and telephone services -- looks like a no-brainer. It means more than just integrating billing for customers, or consolidating services to one provider.
Adding wireless to the bundle is the way providers can really give customers mobile access to a much broader range of services. Wireless is seen as the glue that will ultimately hold it all together. It will give customers mobile access to services such as email, web surfing, telephony, and eventually video and even television programming.
Major cable providers such as Comcast, Advanced Newhouse, Cox, and Time Warner are rolling out pilot programs early in 2007 that will give customers access to email, cable TV guide and home voice mail from their integrated mobile phones.
