Yahoo takes ads on mobile phones to the next level - Yahoo's Mobile Web service has proved to be reasonably successful, and the company sees big things for the future. Like many others, they see the mobile phone gradually becoming a "mini web browser." Yahoo's internet-based contextual advertising service is already a major user of graphics, and they now plan to extend the "experience" to mobile phone users by including graphics in mobile phone ads.

The biggest challenge is the small screen size. Along with others planning to use mobiles phones for advertising, the hope is that people will eventually become used to using their phones to look at images -- an obvious spillover of the use of mobile phones for cameras, video recorders, etc.

Initial ads from Yahoo will be 150 x 21 pixels, displayed as a "banner" at the top of the screen. They will be clickable and will be able to initiate a call direct to the advertiser.
