Ten Reasons You Should Use Bluetooth

By: Christopher Smith

If you are one of the many people who wonder exactly what Bluetooth technology is, you're about to get a brief rundown.

1) Bluetooth provides the ability for items that often need to be hard wired to be completely wireless. It allows you to use your laptop, cell phones, and hand held computer without being limited by cords, wires, and connections. In other words, Bluetooth technology allows portable devices to be truly portable.

2) Bluetooth is a surprisingly affordable option when compared to similar technologies. Because Bluetooth is inexpensive for companies to utilize they are also willing to pass the savings along to consumers.

3) Perhaps the greatest thing about Bluetooth for the average consumer is the fact that it is easy to use. There are no complicated sequences of keys you have to learn in order to make use of your Bluetooth devices.
4) Another winning fact about Bluetooth devices is that they will work with other Bluetooth enabled devices. If you switch from a Motorola phone to a Samsung phone (provided they are both Bluetooth capable) you will not have to buy a new set of accessories in order for them to work with your phone.

5) Low interference is another bonus for these devices. People often find that wireless devices receive constant interference by others operating on the same frequencies. This is not an issue with Bluetooth as it utilizes technologies that limit the risk of this occurrence.

6) Lower energy consumption is another benefit of Bluetooth over similar devices. This means you will drain your battery less often or use less electricity in the use of your Bluetooth devices.

7) Bluetooth allows compatible devices to share data and voice communication. This means that you can drive more safely while talking on your cell phone.

8) You have the option of creating a Personal Area Network (PAN) with your Bluetooth device. This network operates within a 30 foot range and can have as many as 7 devices connected.

9) Bluetooth is emerging technology. As such, they are constantly offering better features and services. They are also behaving very wisely in creating consumer loyalty by making their new technologies compatible with existing technologies. This means that you can continuously upgrade your devices.

10) We've seen many fads come and go in the cellular community. Bluetooth, however, seems to be in it for the long haul. They are committed to raising the bar for wireless technology and have in the process gained many loyal customers and fans.

If you rely on cellular technology isn't it time you checked out how Bluetooth could benefit you?

Is the Apple iPhone Overpriced? - by Chris Simpson

Costing about $500 or $600 (depending on the specific model), the Apple iPhone might seem significantly more expensive than its Plain Jane cellphone counterparts which only cost $100 to $200. But let’s take a closer look at whether it is a fair comparison.

Apple’s products, like Japanese manufacturer Sony, have always commanded a premium in the market.

While it’s easy to say that a similar cellphone might cost significant less, and represent better value for money, is that really the case?

For starters, Apple has emphasized a great deal on the design and ergonomics of its products, as well as the usability of its products.

Witness the Apple Macintosh.
When released in 1984, it signalled a revolution for users everywhere.

Where computers used to be cryptic devices where you needed to learn to type cryptic codes to get it working, the Macintosh brought the Graphical User Interface (or GUI for short) to the forefront.

Some Advantages of VoIP

Ip telefoni - Telefoni leverer telefoniløsninger til danske virksomheder både som traditionelle prefix-løsninger og som komplette access-produkter.

With VoIP, instead of using traditional land lines to make voice calls, you use a broadband connection to the Internet. That allows you to bypass the telephone company (to a large degree) and thereby avoid their charges.

This also allows VoIP providers to bundle add-on services that regular phone companies charge for, such as voice mail, call forwarding, and call waiting. It is the digital nature of VoIP that makes this possible.

When you look at the numbers, VoIP services cost about half the cost of traditional phone services. One big reason is that many VoIP services in the United States and Canada allow you to call anywhere in North America at no extra charge. So long distance charges are completely eliminated. This is the cash cow of the traditional phone companies.

Of course as VoIP becomes more widespread and is generally adopted by major telcos and cable providers we can expect these fees to creep back in. Rogers Cable in Canada, for instance, offers free phoning across Canada only to other Rogers customers.

Unique Advantages Of Prepaid Calling Card - By Sam Jose

Prepaid phone cards, also named prepaid calling cards, prepaid international phone cards are fast selling out from convenience stores, supermarkets and hundreds of websites online. There are many unique advantages associated with prepaid calling card. The main among them are:

Can make calls from a phone that is not international calling enabled. People choose international phone card, when they want to call up their friends, relatives or business partners who live half way down the globe. No agreements to sign and no bills to wait for.

Customers save 54% to 76%on international calling with prepaid phone cards. With advancements in technology, people can today cut costs of international calling by 50% or more, simply by using international phone card. For example the cost of calling to India from USA starts from 3.3 ¢ a minute plus local call charges with India phone card. How Calling Cards Work - by Michael Olativ

How do calling cards work? And, why should I care?

Well the simple answer to the second question - is; knowledge is power, and an educated consumer is the best consumer. Do calling card rates sometimes sound too good to be true? Well most of their rates are true, of course with some exceptions, and understanding how they work will help explain why.

Now for the answer to the first question; all calling cards are basically used in the same way, you dial a toll free or local access number, enter your PIN when prompted, then the number you want to call - then your call is connected. A very simple process but this is only the beginning.

Calling card companies purchase the minutes you use in bulk, sometimes even by the millions. Anyone who has ever shopped at a "Sam's Club" can understand the value of buying in bulk. The big Phone companies, who actually own the lines, offer huge discounts for bulk purchases because most of their calling capacity often goes unused. This is a very similar concept to those discount travel companies...

Kids & Cell Phones - by Robert Lett

Is it safety? Is it security? Or is it just cool?

Have you ever noticed how many kiosks have popped up in you favorite mall? And just about all of them are selling cell phones. Teens can actually design their own graphics and have the graphic airbrushed on the face of the phone itself. They face plates and antennas that light up on each ring. Just drop by a kiosk next time your at the mall, you'll see what I mean.

In a resent Los Angeles Times article, they stated that teens with cell phones were at around 16% on average. I think by 2005, it will more of an average of 50% or even more.

Cell phones seem to be a great security feature for the parents. They can now be 'connected' to their children 24 hours a day, 7 days week, and 365 days a year. And of course, it allows the child to dial 911 if an emergency arises. And now with the GPS Location Sensitivity feature, your child will be located during that emergency with ten feet of the phones location.

Of course, with all this technology and added security, there are a few problems. The school systems are being cluttered with phone calls in the middle of class. And there is always the problem with calls in the hallways and bathrooms going on continuously. Most schools are adopting the "use it during school - you loose it" policy. This has become a real burden on school administrators. Their parents as far as carrying the phones themselves back the children. So this isn't something they can take away and keep until the end of the year. They must give the phones back at the end of the day. This is usually enough of a deterrent to keep them off during school hours...

Samsung Unveils Mobile WiMAX Wave 2

Feb 26, 2007 - Linknet Mobile News >>

Free Mobile Ringtones - Free ringtones, free nokia ringtones, free mobile ringtones, free mp3 ringtones, free polyphonic ringtones and much more.

Dubai, UAE - Samsung Electronics Co. demonstrated its newest Mobile WiMAX technology, "Mobile WiMAX WAVE 2" at the 3GSM World Congress 2007, Barcelona, Spain.

"Mobile WiMAX Wave 2" which supports Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) and Smart Antenna is a next generation mobile telecommunications technology created by the combination of Mobile WiMAX and 4G technology. It is capable of 40 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload transmission speeds at its maximum limit.

The demonstration in the Samsung booth, Samsung Electronics used "Mobile WiMAX Wave 2" systems and terminals to successfully demonstrate high-speed transmission of data at 34 Mbps for downloading and 8 Mbps for uploading. At this download speed users can download a typical MP3 music file (3 MB) in 0.7 second and a movie (700 MB) in 2 minutes and 45seconds.

Samsung also introduced its in-house-developed core chip for "Mobile WiMAX Wave 2". This new technology will be deployed by Sprint and other operators by late this year.

Samsung Electronics is courting 35 operators in 23 countries with this new technology and has already concluded contracts or is implementing pilot service with nine operators in seven countries including the US, Europe, South America & the Middle East.

Voip for Mobile Phones Being Rolled Out

Feb 16, 2007 - Mobile Info >>>

VoIP for Cell Phones on the Horizon - PCWorld.com reports that Avi Shechter, co-founder and CEO of Fringland Ltd. (Fring), could be on to something big with the launch of a cheap Internet-based phone service that runs over mobile networks.

The service is essentially a peer-to-peer VoIP service (think Skype) that uses cell networks rather than WiFi or broadband Ip connections.

To make it work you must have a Nokia Series 60 3rd edition phone and download the 200kb Fring application to your handset. Fring expects the application to soon run on other phones and operating systems such as Windows Mobile.

The application will connect with Skype, Google Talk and MSN Messenger. Just as with Skype, once a contact is added to your contact list you will be able to see when your contacts are online and then communicate directly with them.

Billing from your cell provider will be based on your data plan, rather than your voice plan. If Fring callers want to access the public telephone system they can do so using Skype out. That carries an additional charge, but making international calls with your cell phone will be considerably cheaper than using typical cell networks.

Because of the potential loss of lucrative voice business cell phone networks are likely to resist this move. T-Mobile International AG & Co. KG, have banned the use of VOIP applications on their networks, and other networks are considering doing the same.

Using Your Mobile Phone to Read Text

Reading On The Move Without A Pda, All You Need Is Your Mobile Phone - by Konstantin Frid

Displaying texts: books, news, mass media messages, helps or documents is among the most used functions of any PDA. Articles are no exception. Just download a couple of dozen of articles on whatever the subject - from a site like this one into your PDA - and read away anyplace. Before you know, you become quite familiar with the subject you read on.

Yet what can one do when there is no PDA? None at all or none available at a time. However, at a time like this, there is something you never leave behind, which is... your cellular phone. Expensive modern telephones display texts, even though making reading not quite as comfortable as palmtops do. However, most cheap or outdated telephones can do the same with just about as much convenience as when using a PDA. This capability is based on a seemingly very simple idea. A text is converted into a Java application which can be loaded into a mobile phone the same way one downloads games or other applications like, for instance, a calculator...

Choosing Between Cell Phone Providers

How To Determine Which Cell Service Is Best For You by Jon Arnold

With every cell phone carrier advertising their latest cell phones and super plans, it gets more and more difficult to determine which one is the right one for you. How do you know? If you live in a major metro area or almost any larger city, the plans, service and coverage are going to be pretty much the same. But if your intended usage is outside the major metro areas or you will be using your cell phone all over the place because you plan to travel a lot with it, then this is where the rubber meets the road and the RIGHT plan takes significantly more scrutiny.

Before going any further, it is important to note that you need to define what you plan to do with your cell phone. Now with that said, throw that note away. What you really need to determine is what ARE you going to be using it for, and what capabilities and functionality do you REQUIRE (not just merely “want” or find somewhat cool or desirable) with your cell phone and cellular service? If you don’t define this BEFORE you start shopping, it is almost inevitable that you are going to be spending more than you need to...

2007 to be big year for wireless integration - We've been hearing for years how television and internet services will inevitably be integrated by carriers such as the large telco and cable companies. 2006 was the year VoIP really came of age and the cable companies started integrating voice over ip with their other services.

Big deal, right...

All signs point to 2007 being the year that wireless is added to the mix in a serious way. The telcos have been dragging their feet (as they usually do), letting the big cable providers lead the way.

Adding wireless to the services bundle offered by cable operators -- which already includes television, video, internet, and telephone services -- looks like a no-brainer. It means more than just integrating billing for customers, or consolidating services to one provider.

Adding wireless to the bundle is the way providers can really give customers mobile access to a much broader range of services. Wireless is seen as the glue that will ultimately hold it all together. It will give customers mobile access to services such as email, web surfing, telephony, and eventually video and even television programming.

Major cable providers such as Comcast, Advanced Newhouse, Cox, and Time Warner are rolling out pilot programs early in 2007 that will give customers access to email, cable TV guide and home voice mail from their integrated mobile phones.

Mobile Phone Misuse Tackled by Scottish Educators

Jan 2/07 - Linknet Tech News >>

Low cost PC to Phone - Save up to 90% on International Calls with Low Cost PC to Phone. >>>

The Scotsman reports that schools are becoming more concerned about the potential for mobile phone misuse by children using camera and video phones to invade privacy of teachers and fellow students, and even bully other students.

As a result the The Educational Institute of Scotland has sent a "guidance pack" with a number of policies on mobile use to all schools in Scotland.

One concern is with the practice of "happy-slapping" in the playground. This is where camera phone images and video clips are uploaded to sites like Youtube.com where they can be viewed by thousands or even millions of people.

This is also happening to teachers -- they are being photographed or videoed without their knowledge.

In the eyes of Educational authorities this is clearly an unwanted invasion of privacy and must be policed by teachers and school staff members.

New Graphical Ads on Mobile Phones from Yahoo

Yahoo takes ads on mobile phones to the next level - Yahoo's Mobile Web service has proved to be reasonably successful, and the company sees big things for the future. Like many others, they see the mobile phone gradually becoming a "mini web browser." Yahoo's internet-based contextual advertising service is already a major user of graphics, and they now plan to extend the "experience" to mobile phone users by including graphics in mobile phone ads.

The biggest challenge is the small screen size. Along with others planning to use mobiles phones for advertising, the hope is that people will eventually become used to using their phones to look at images -- an obvious spillover of the use of mobile phones for cameras, video recorders, etc.

Initial ads from Yahoo will be 150 x 21 pixels, displayed as a "banner" at the top of the screen. They will be clickable and will be able to initiate a call direct to the advertiser.

High Speed Wireless Service Introduced by Korean Company

On May 16th, SK Telecom(SKT) began the world's first commercial High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) service in South Korea. South Korea already has an advanced internet infrastructure, and this new service greatly expands potential internet access for mobile devices. This was followed up on June 30 with the introduction of commercial services for WiBro (Wireless Broadband Internet.)

WiBro and HSDPA offer super high-speed wireless internet mobility. WiBro is built around data communications and HSDPA has been upgraded from audio only to include data communication services in order to eventually accommodate greatly expanded multimedia data flows.

WiBro, the much talked-about high speed mobile internet provides wireless internet access just about anywhere (even with moving at 60Km) using various machines. In addition, it is reasonably priced for given high-speed data transfers. In real world tests the current implementaion of HSDPA can handle between 2 -3 Mbps data transfer -- fast enough to support high speed mobile internet services. Its theoretical tranfer rate is 14.4 Mbps, so there is tremendous potential for future improvements in the service.

The implementation of this new technology should open up significant market possibilities -- for instance in the expansion of wireless internet services, and in particular for the transmission of multimedia services.

But significant development has to take place before this technology matures. The coverage area is currently quite small, the data transfer rate must be developed to handle larger volumes, and of course multimedia content must be developed or reworked in order to give companies a reason to adopt the new technology.

Cell Phones and Lightning

A 15-year-old girl was struck by lightning while using her cell phone in a London park last year. Some doctors and health advocates are warning against the outdoor use of the devices during storms.

Because she suffered cardiac arrest when struck the girl has no memory of the incident. She survived the strike, but is confined to a wheelchair, has lost some hearing in the ear she was holding the phone to, and suffers a variety of physical, cognitive and emotional problems.

Three British doctors writing in the British Medical Journal warned of cell phone use during lightning storms. "This rare phenomenon is a public health issue, and education is necessary to highlight the risk of using mobile phones outdoors during stormy weather to prevent future fatal consequences from lightning-strike injuries related to mobile phones."

But other experts dispute these conclusions, pointing to other variables that may have caused the incident.

John Drengenberg manager of consumer affairs at Underwriters Laboratories Inc., said "I am not aware of any research on a cell phone being a particular attractor of lightning. There's nothing that would indicate they would attract lightning other than the fact that this girl with her cell phone and antenna would be something that would be the only thing that lightning would go to in that area."

Those who warn of the dangers suggest that the proximity of the conductive materials in the phone would disrupt the "flashover" effect caused by the skin in normal lightning strikes. A person's skin is quite resistant to electrical conductivity and usually prevents serious damage to the interior of the body. But "flashover" can result in greater damage and more deaths.

In spite of this convincing sounding theory, the group could find only three other instances where death or serious injury resulted from a lightning strike while using a cell phone.

Experts generally warn against using any electrical appliance during a thunderstorm, including landline phones and household appliances.

Tibetan Wireless Technology Conference to Focus on Rural Wireless

The Tibetan Technology Center (TibTec) is located in Dharamsala, India where a number of Tibetan tech experts work in exile from their homeland. Their primary goal is to develop wireless technologies that can service rural areas. So they focus on what is known as "wireless mesh network development".

TibTec plans to host the 'AirJaldi' Summit on wireless technolgies in October, 2006. They are teaming up with the Djursland International Institute of Rural Wireless Broadband, which is a European leader in community-based WIFI technology.

Based in Dharamsala, the Tibetan Technology Center (TibTec), a prominent player in wireless mesh network development, has announced plans to host the 'AirJaldi' Summit on wireless technologies in October.

The conference will be held during Oct 22-25 at Dharamsala, close to the Mcleodganj headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile headed by the Dalai Lama. Training workshops will run for two weeks after the conference.

The Air Jaldi Summit comes as a result of international interest in the Dharamsala Community Wireless Mesh Network. Mesh networks are an alternative kind of decentralized networking infrastructure that are inexpensive, and very reliable. Nodes withing the network act as repeaters to transmit data from other nearby nodes.

This type of network can span large distances, especially over rough or difficult terrain since nodes are close to each other and each node is connected to several other nodes. If one node drops out of the network due to hardware failure, weather, or whatever, nodes connected to it simply find another route. Extra capacity and network expansion can be had by simply adding more nodes. Nodes within the network can be either fixed or mobile.

Many community activists and technical researchers looking for solutions for rural areas consider the Dharamsala Community Wireless Mesh Network "a successful example of a sustainable technology integration model."

International Calling Made Simpler And Cheaper

by Bernard Pragides

When people make international calls from their cell phones or land lines they often have to be aware of what time they are calling, and even where they are calling from. This is because international rates can skyrocket through the course of a day. Things are not much different with traditional phone companies. International phone rates are generally extremely high with major phone carriers, so many people are forced to limit the number of calls they make outside of the United States each month.

Prepaid Long Distance

Prepaid international phone accounts can greatly reduce the costs involved when placing calls overseas, and to Canada, Mexico, Asia and South America.

Pin Free Service

Prepaid phone accounts function in a similar way to calling cards. However, they do not require a pin number to make a call. Callers can access their accounts through a toll free number, or through a local access number that works in their area. Using a local access number will actually reduce the already low rates by one cent per minute.

New Tips For Shopping Cellular Services

by Aaron Siegel

The best money saving practice for buying new cellular phones and service plans is to buy from a dealer, not through the cellular provider directly. Dealers compete against each other with lower prices than the actual cellular providers do.

The reason for this is that dealers are much smaller and rely solely on cell phone revenues. The actual cellular providers themselves have many other fronts, battles, and sources of revenue, so price satisfaction in any one sector is not always available.
